The Guesthouse Experience in Bali

Jun 21, 2008 Author: Francine | Filed under: Indonesia

Bali is a picturesque destination resplendent with volcanoes, rice paddies, lush forests and warm tropical beaches set on the Indian Ocean. Finding budget accommodations when visiting this warm and inviting city can leave travelers with more money in their pocket for dining options, sightseeing adventures and of course souvenirs to take home to friends and family.

Ala’s Hibiscus 2

Part of the fun of staying at Ala’s Hibiscus 2 is the journey to get there. Paths to the guesthouse twist and turn and follow the channels of irrigation often with running water. All rooms have exceptional views along with mosquito nets and hot running water. Rice paddies surround the visitor and seeing feathered fowl is the norm and not the exception. Located in the neighborhood of Ubad, the accommodations are low key and quirky with budget prices that will please the traveler with a light pocketbook.

Homestay at the Biangs

With just six rooms set in a charming garden, walking amidst the rice paddies and the lush countryside is a pleasant experience not to be missed. The word biang translates to mama from the Balinese high dialect and the influence of “mother” is felt here.  Sweeping views of verdant foliage can be had for a little more money and is well worth it. Nocturnal birds serenade guests to sleep free of charge.

Blue Ocean

In the heart of the chic areas of Legian and Seminyak you will find the Blue Ocean guesthouse. Nothing fancy but with its close proximity (A 1 minute commute to the sea) to the ocean, surfers come to stay for more than just a week. A budget lodging that allows guest to be where the action is, pleasant rooms, outdoor bathrooms and hot water ensures that guests have the basic necessities.

Finding accommodations that are clean and comfortable in Bali doesn’t have to break the bank. Travelers on a budget can enjoy not only clean and comfortable accommodations, but just a little bit out of the norm so that they can relish a culture that is different from their own.

Where to Sleep When Visiting Goa

Jun 20, 2008 Author: Francine | Filed under: India

Goa is distinct in many ways besides just sun and sand. It is different from many other areas in India in that it can be explored in ways that other states of India cannot. In the 1960s hippies were in abundance, but today Goa belongs to packpackers, Indians, as well as visitors from European nations looking for an exotic jaunt. It is said that the locals are a friendly and relaxed bunch with a variety of languages spoken.

Alfonso Guest House

The family run guesthouse in the Panajii neighborhood represents the elegance of renovated colonials for which the area is known. Understated elegance is on display with a simple staircase leading to a mosaic tiled terrace on the rooftop. Guests gather for morning chai and afternoon drinks while looking over the spectacular views. Rooms are spacious and airy with bathrooms that are attached complete with hot water. Expect prices to be in the mid-range for a night’s lodging.

Alidia Beach Cottages

Baga is a vibrant neighborhood but the Alidia Beach Cottages are a welcome respite on the beach front. Crisp white buildings house rooms that are beautifully kept and cottages for larger groups. The low key ambiance of the restaurant set in the open air is the ideal place for a quiet read or watching television while sipping cocktails. There are a few balcony areas nestled between worn stone stairs and the trees where guests can relax with a refreshing drink. Prices at this guesthouse are also in the mid-range.

Arabian Retreat

The chance of finding spacious accommodations with not one, but two balconies just two minutes from the beach in a quiet enclave in the touristy neighborhood of Calangute at an affordable price is not always easy. The Arabian Retreat offers guests that and more. There are just 11 rooms in the hotel and they are clean and well maintained. Breakfast is included in the price. Close to bars and restaurants as well as the beach, try to get a room upstairs if it is available.

Goa is a popular destination and can become crowded depending upon the season. Our recommended accommodations seek to offer travelers a quiet retreat while still being within distance to the excitement that Goa has to offer.
