The Asia Travel Blog
Goa is distinct in many ways besides just sun and sand. It is different from many other areas in India in that it can be explored in ways that other states of India cannot. In the 1960s hippies were in abundance, but today Goa belongs to packpackers, Indians, as well as visitors from European nations looking for an exotic jaunt. It is said that the locals are a friendly and relaxed bunch with a variety of languages spoken.
Alfonso Guest House
The family run guesthouse in the Panajii neighborhood represents the elegance of renovated colonials for which the area is known. Understated elegance is on display with a simple staircase leading to a mosaic tiled terrace on the rooftop. Guests gather for morning chai and afternoon drinks while looking over the spectacular views. Rooms are spacious and airy with bathrooms that are attached complete with hot water. Expect prices to be in the mid-range for a night’s lodging.
Alidia Beach Cottages
Baga is a vibrant neighborhood but the Alidia Beach Cottages are a welcome respite on the beach front. Crisp white buildings house rooms that are beautifully kept and cottages for larger groups. The low key ambiance of the restaurant set in the open air is the ideal place for a quiet read or watching television while sipping cocktails. There are a few balcony areas nestled between worn stone stairs and the trees where guests can relax with a refreshing drink. Prices at this guesthouse are also in the mid-range.
Arabian Retreat
The chance of finding spacious accommodations with not one, but two balconies just two minutes from the beach in a quiet enclave in the touristy neighborhood of Calangute at an affordable price is not always easy. The Arabian Retreat offers guests that and more. There are just 11 rooms in the hotel and they are clean and well maintained. Breakfast is included in the price. Close to bars and restaurants as well as the beach, try to get a room upstairs if it is available.
Goa is a popular destination and can become crowded depending upon the season. Our recommended accommodations seek to offer travelers a quiet retreat while still being within distance to the excitement that Goa has to offer.
