Cambodia is an ancient land with ancient customs. Visitors to Cambodia can enjoy the historical sites, yet enjoy modern entertainment options as well. Many of the once abandoned cinemas with the encouragement of the Ministry of Fine Arts and Culture have reopened their doors. Khmer films are popular among the citizens not just in the city, but in outlying provinces as well.

For those visitors that don’t speak the Khmer language, there are a number of private viewing rooms that feature English language films at the Movie Street Video Center, as well as French language movies at the French Cultural Center.

For those looking for a bit more excitement, there are plenty of nightclubs in Phnom Penh. You can choose from a variety of clubs where you can mingle with the locals such as U2, Spark and Rock. The disco scene doesn’t heat up late in the evening, usually after one has had a meal followed by a few drinks at a bar. The price for drinks can be high, but the street seller outside is always available to get a drink at a lower price.

If you travel outside of Phnom Penh, Khmer nightclubs are in abundance. The club’s are targeted to men, but women tourists are always welcome. This gives the tourist a chance to get up close and see what Khmer dancing is all about.

If a quiet bar or a lively pub is more to your taste, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh is where you will find them. Outside of these areas, drinking can be found in the nightclubs, restaurants and street stalls.

To get more of a flavor of Cambodia, plan a visit during the three day celebration of the Cambodian New Year that falls during April. It is a three day event that takes place when the harvest is in. Homes are gaily decorated and the shrines have plenty of food and beverages, a traditional offering to God.

The rainy season in May is hailed with the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. This is cultural event that alerts the nation that the rainy season has begun and farmers get ready for rice farming as they begin to plough. The Royal Palace at Phnom Penh is where this celebration takes place.

When one visits Cambodia, there is no end of attractions, historical sites, arts, culture, food and entertainment. One visit to Cambodia won’t be enough to sample the many sites and sounds that are uniquely Cambodia.
